Ganymede never wanted to be a king. His birth mother left him with a woman who was paid by her for the keeping of the child, and who had no substantial feelings for him except that she enjoyed the gold. Ganymede hadn't understood that this situation was unusual until he first entered school, and it was brought forcibly to his attention by watching the familial interactions of the other students. Ganymede readjusted his expectations, confronted his nursemaid about his true parents, and got an answer he had never expected. The woman had only just confessed to their mother being the late queen when a messenger arrived from Fiore, with news for the 'king'. Ganymede, already tired, constantly stressed, run ragged from working to create a nest egg of his own, went unwillingly when called. He was their last option, they explained; they needed him.
Ganymede is a tolerable king, but not at all exceptional. He needs someone to balance him out; someone to lean on when he's overwhelmed with the pressures of the throne. The king is oftentimes alienated from his people
He didn't last long on the throne alone. Scarcely after six months he sent for his brother, and surprised the country at large by immediately naming Iapyx as his fellow king. Rossore has legends of such things, but traditionally they have had single or married rulers for centuries; but Ganymede bulldozed his way through the laws, and the council's arguments, and literally everything else. He simply couldn't do it without Iapyx; he didn't have it in him. Iapyx makes Ganymede a better person, in half a dozen obvious and a dozen more subtle ways. Iapyx gives Ganymede something to center on; Iapyx has served as his brother's rock since the two were children, and Ganymede practically relies on it now. Iapyx can always talk Ganymede down when he's upset about something, can always make his opinion and voice heard when Ganymede is closed to everyone else. In short, he made Ganymede a far better king than he'd been before, and for that the people were (begrudgingly) grateful. Ganymede is now a more reliable king, though the people advise one another to request an audience with Iapyx if they have any personal concerns, as Ganymede has neither the patience or the time.
