hechiz
ruled by Tlatoani Yayauhqui Citlalmina
accompanied by his younger sister, Zyanya Citlalmina
Hechiz is a country that makes up half the continent of Veralsy, but has little in common with its neighbor. It is primarily jungle; there are some patches of grasslands, a few uncommon stretches of something akin to a savannah, but there is little of the country that could be properly considered empty. (That being said, very few civilized folk actually live in the jungle. People who do are considered unnatural and very unlucky.)
The weather in Hechiz is mostly wet and it rains for the majority of the year. They don't have a proper dry season, or anything that could be a believable winter. The temperature is usually unpleasantly high, and the humidity is as well. Most citizens have learned how to read the weather, and understand that a change in the omnipresent humidity signals a storm of some kind of another. The soil is quite fertile, but it's difficult to grow exotic species simply because the local fauna wipes out everything else. The jungle encroaches on the grasslands even, and every year another thin sliver is lost to the thick trees and their dangerous inhabitants.
Hechiz is mostly known for their superstitions, as they are by far the most suspicious of all the countries. Although most places have shed the mythology of the elder gods Hechiz has certainly not; and they have collected superstitions more than any of their neighbors as well. They are particularly leery of ghosts, and have complicated and private rituals surrounding death and burial. They dislike any sort of magic, and are in fact one of the few places people might venture that they'd need to hide any mystical abilities. They can be a dangerous, violent people if they feel it necessary.
The title of Tlatoania is basically 'king', though this is not a rank that is ever painlessly inherited. It is won singularly through bloodshed, via a battle or a series of battles with the previous Tlatoania and his or her council/friends/anyone willing to lay down their life. These battles are not undertaken lightly, as they can end only in death, with the living participant crowned the new Tlatoania. Traditionally there is no preference on gender.
The current Tlatoani, Yayauhqui, only very recently took the throne. No one expected it of him, and Qui keeps the purpose of it mostly under wraps. In truth, Hechiz is a very superstitious country, and the people have always regarded Qui's younger sister Zyanya with distrust for what she can do. When an epidemic swept through the country and killed many of their people, they blamed it immediately on Zan. Qui recklessly challenged the Tlatoania to battle in order to take the title for himself, consequently allowing him to protect his sister. He won, though he limps still from the fight.
The national language is Tlatonal.
