mikena
ruled by Anassa Clytemnestra Mellona
previously ruled by her mother, Anax Mother Hecuba Mellona
A warm coastal country, Mikena generates much of its revenue from fishing and trading. It's well-known for its many ports and coastal cities, and is an important harbor for its neighbouring countries. Mikenan architecture tends to be rendered in the traditional Greco style, with wide spaces and open floor concepts and the iconic white marble columns. This influence is particularly noticeable at Mikena's capital, Mikena Bay, where the country's oldest 'castle' lies. It is shaped more akin to a mansion than a castle, and has the same marble pillars.
Much of the staff lives within the castle, along with the royal family, though there is a smattering of private houses on the family's grounds for others (visitors, friends, ambassadors, etc). Closer to the coast there is the remainder of the city of Mikena Bay, a booming capital of great, beautiful buildings. It is by far Mikena's busiest city and sports the largest population, with a thriving economy and one of the country's most popular sea ports. Their largest port is close to Acriens, and historically Mikena and Acriens were allied trading partners.
Mikena boasts an impressive army and navy, with the latter being the biggest along this stretch of the coast. They rivaled even Acriens in its heyday. They are generally well-respected due to their military, and while they don't support a draft a majority of their population at least goes through military training. Mikena has been mostly peaceful lately, under the thumb of its previous Anassa, Hecuba.
Their government is a matriarchy, topped by a woman called the Anassa. It's a title equivalent to queen, and inherited by way of bloodlines. The previous Anassa, Hecuba, became Anax Mother when she bequeathed the throne to her daughter. As Anax Mother Hecuba retains a decent amount of power, and if she wishes can raise serious accusations against her daughter. She lives at the castle with Clytemnestra, as is tradition.
The current Anassa is Clytemnestra, Hecuba's oldest and only child, and her ascension has been met widely with open praise. Clytemnestra is a child of the country; her mother, widowed shortly after Cly's birth, raised her under the country's scrutiny and with her council's firm hand. Clytemnestra has thrived thus far on the throne, and succeeded in making a good reputation on her own.
The national language is Mikene.
